(Oryza sativa); Upland variety; Awned;
Russian cultivar Primanychskij produces large, brown rice kernels that have short awns. Its plants reach 34 inches and tiller productively. Primanychskij's height increases its potential to lodge during grain fill.
Our seed stock came from John Sherck of Sherck Seeds.
John's culinary assessment of Primanychskij:
"I dehulled 460 grams of Primanychskij which yielded 344 grams of rice (2 cups worth). Next I pearled the rice (removing 90% of the bran) using a Japanese kitchen top pearling machine. I cooked the rice up as as regular rice (not as sticky) and the result was delicious. This variety is likely more of a “medium grain” type as it was semi-sticky but held its shape. I utilized the rice the second day as “fried rice”. The result was excellent."

IMPORTANT NOTE: Keep in mind, rice seed is hulled. Rice is planted in its hull but after harvest, that hull must be removed before eating. De-hulling rice is not easily achieved by hand, requiring mechanical assistance such as the Brill De-huller or an electric de-huller.
