Hugo's Edible Pod Pea
(Pisum sativum); Climbing pea; Heritage - Centennial; a Wisconsin Connection variety; Dual use: snow pea or soup pea; Minimum
This edible pod pea originates in the garden of Hugo, a second generation Dutch gardener in Oostberg, Wisconsin whose parents carried these peas with them in 1907 when they emigrated. Hugo shared the peas with his neighbor, Bob, who introduced them to the seed saving community in 1993. Vigorous 3 foot vines are early maturing as an abundance of pinky purple flowers give way to 3 inch pods that are scrumptious, succulent snow peas. When pods are left to dry on their vines, peas transform into flavorful, firm soup peas.
