Merkel Grey Stripe Bean
(Phaseolus vulgaris); Heritage - Centennial; an Indiana Connection variety; Pole bean; Dry bean; Minimum 20 seeds
Introduced to the seed saving community in 1991 by Indiana gardener Ann Fuller, Merkel Grey Stripe is a vigorous pole bean gifted to her from a friend of the Merkel family. At that time the remaining Merkel brother was in his 90s and it is believed the bean was in their family for nearly a century. Pods are long and a bit fleshy and might make a decent snap bean but it is the elongated kidney shaped dry beans I am after to stock my pantry in anticipation of chilly day comfort foods.
