Niquen Lowland Rice (seeds)

(Oryza sativa); Awnless;

Developed in Biobío Chile for early maturity and cold tolerance, Niquen is a medium grain brown lowland rice. Our original seed source is John Sherck who first grew it in northern Indiana in 2019 as part of his trials of early maturing lowland rice grown under upland conditions. Having a shorter growing season than John, we include Niquen in our rice collection for its early maturity.

Here's what John has to say about Niquen:

"Niquen flowered 46 days from transplanting and was harvested 84 days from transplanting. It is a medium grain, brown rice. The plants reached 40″ in height and had some minor lodging issues after periods of heavy rainfall.
The flavor of Niquen delicious! I did pearl this rice before cooking. The texture was creamy and a bit chewy, the expected result with a medium grain rice. Not the best candidate for “fried rice”, but excellent with veggies and a bit of soy sauce, garlic and chile peppers."

We grow Niquen under upland conditions in our wettest soil.

Niquen reportedly produces mature seed upon ratooning; we intend to investigate this property.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Keep in mind, rice seed is hulled. Rice is planted in its hull but after harvest, that hull must be removed before eating. De-hulling rice is not easily achieved by hand, requiring mechanical assistance such as the Brill De-huller or an electric de-huller.
