Norwegian 1870 Bush Bean
(Phaseolus vulgaris); Heirloom; Bush bean; Dry bean; a Wisconsin Connection variety; a Withee & Wanigan Bean Collection variety; Minimum 20 seeds
Aptly named, this Norwegian dry bush bean arrived in the US (Utah) in 1870. From the Hartland Wisconsin garden of Jim Johnson, these large deep purple patterned kidney beans caught the eye of Seedsman John Withee, becoming one of his "painted jewels" in the extensive Withee & Wanigan Bean Collection before entering the general seed saving community in 1981. Norwegian 1870's 5 inch slightly curved pods hold an average of 4 seeds and mature mid-August for us when direct seeded early June. The dry beans are hardy and flavorful pantry staples.
