How can one resist a bean associated with laughter? And a greasy bean that matures in the north no less!

In the early 1960s in Virginia, Silas Gilliam obtained this bean from Arlie Hubbard who was by nature in a frequent state of laughter. The variety made its way into the collection of John Withee and the Wanigan Associates which was then donated to Seed Savers Exchange in 1981.

A staple crop in more southerly gardens, greasy beans are best as snap beans when the seeds inside the smoothly slick (greasy) pods are at their plumpest. Laughing Arlie Greasy matured late in my garden but did produce a goodly amount of knobby pods, each holding an average of 6 cutshort beans. I hope that with successive plantings this greasy bean variety becomes more comfortable with our short-seasoned, cooler conditions so that maturity and productivity continue to adapt to our homestead.
