Mongeta del Ganxet Bean
(Phaseolus vulgaris); aka Ganxet; a Slow Food Ark of Taste variety; Pole bean; Dry bean; Minimum 15 seeds
Rare; Limited inventory
Catalonia's coveted culinary treasure has acclimatized to Michigan gardens albeit as a late maturing variety. Originating in the Maresme and Vallès counties, Ganxet was awarded Protected Designation of Origin status in 2011. The hooked dry beans are renowned amongst chefs and gourmands for their delicate skin and smooth creamy texture with a buttery flavor.
As a late maturing variety, it is important this variety is seeded as soon as your soil is above 55° F to maximize time for pod maturity. (We use a simple meat probe thermometer to measure soil temperature.) Vines are moderately productive and benefit from greater plant spacing.
