Oats at Great Lakes Staple Seeds
We grow mostly hull-less oats with breakfast in mind for their use. Two kinds of hulled oats are also grown for a cover crop or animal feed.
As a crop, oats do not have as long of a history in our diet as other grains. I expect that until the hull-less varieties came along they were too difficult to process. I like freshly rolled oats for breakfast with a bit of homemade maple or sorghum syrup on top.
Even with some varieties being 'hull-less', there is some preparation required for having breakfast, which is described here.
Oats tolerate cooler, wetter soils, germinating in soils as low as 45°F (7°C.)
