Originally developed for syrup by the Agricultural Experiment Station in Ames, IA from another variety called Early Amber. Ames Amber was trialed throughout Iowa in the 1910's. Its heads hold seeds that mature to a rich brown within shiny black hulls with some seeds losing the covering during cleaning.
