De Barrao Tomato

Red Ripe Rapture - De Barrao's stocky bushes become absolutely laden with gorgeously red, plump Roma-type tomatoes such that the plants require strong support (I had to reinforce their tomato cages with poles.) Set out as transplants mid-May, we were making sauce mid-August from which wafted such a heady sweet tangy aroma it has me longing for winter pizza season! We have Bill McDorman to thank for introducing this variety to the seed saving community after he received it from a plant breeder at the Institute of Horticulture during his 1989 visit to Barnaul Siberia.

From the whole tomatoes pictured in the bowl plus the ~6 that didn't fit we canned 7 half pints of a thick sauce.
