(Vigna unguiculata); an OSSI-pledged variety bred for organic systems; Bush; Minimum 50 seeds
Researched by NASA investigators as one of the crops to sustain long-term space exploration, cowpeas are an all-purpose plant. Their seeds are extremely high in protein and their leaves and immature pods, also nutritious, are quite tasty. This variety bred for organic systems, is the culmination of Carol Deppe's efforts to improve the popular white seeded cowpea variety, "Lady", so it matures productively in short growing seasons; we'd say she was successful! Bushy yet compact upright plants produce copious amounts of slender 7-8 inch pods held aloft above the leaves, making harvest easier. The dry pods are fun to "unzip" to yield their dainty seeds that cook quickly without pre-soaking. Pretty yellow flowers contain nectar that is irresistible to pollinators. Suitable for small gardens.
