Every once in a while when it is too soggy and too cold to plant and seeds are absolutely EVERYWHERE and I'm already falling behind on the "start inside x number of weeks before last frost" crops and there aren't enough spaces on my maps to include all the varieties I want to grow and the date blocks on the calendar become packed with future tasks, it seems so overwhelming... And then along comes something that puts it all in perspective. In this case it is this little Food For Thought gem from NPR: For a Healthier Planet, Eat These 50 Foods, Campaign Urges which details crops that are both beneficial to our health and to that of our planet.

Looking over the list I realise that as a family we already routinely include over 80% of the list in our diet. As a company we offer seeds for 20* of the 50 foods with plans to include more in the future. With this in mind, I can't help but feel a bit of reassurance our efforts are making an impact, as small as it is, and that goes a long way toward calming my pre-season anxieties...

Here is the pdf mentioned in the NPR article: Future 50 Foods: 50 Foods for Healthier People and a Healthier Planet

* As of the 2022 season
