We recently attended two great gatherings of absolutely amazing seed people - first in December, the 4th annual Eastern Canadian Organic Seed Growers Network (ECOSGN) Conference, held in conjunction with the Ecological Farmers Association of Ontario (EFAO) Winter Conference in London Ontario and just recently the 2nd annual Northeast Organic Seed Conference held in Saratoga Springs New York with the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York's (NOFA-NY) Winter Conference. The benefits we gained from the sharing of wisdom, inspiration, experience, stories and seeds are beyond measure and we are truly grateful for the opportunities. Blessed with the professional relationships and friendships of equally passionate like-minded folk, we count ourselves fortunate to be members of such a vibrant seed community. Both conferences bolster our confidence in our ability and resolve to produce high quality seeds from robust plants in dynamic, healthy soils. Of note, Scott came away with new knowledge for his Floriani Red Flint Corn improvement project and I with an invigorated desire to dabble in squash breeding. Each conference also highlights the fact that seed production is not a static event, reinforcing the importance and value in networking and staying informed. Even if you are unable to attend a formal professional conference, I strongly urge you to get (stay) involved in your local seed communities - seed libraries, seed swaps, garden groups and such, for seed is often the beginning of more than just good food...
