Collected Lancashire UK, these winter oats entered our national grain collection in 1932 as a donation from Gartons-Groplan Ltd. Warrington England. Dr. John Garton is credited as the first botanist to show that common grain crops such as oats are self-fertilizing.
As suggested by its name, this oat cultivar has black hulls.
