In its own botanical group distinct from that of common bread wheat, Sandomierka is a club wheat (also known as hedgehog wheat or cluster wheat.) A landrace collected in Krakow, Poland it was donated to the USDA in 1938 by J. Przyborowski of the University of Krakow's Department of Plant Breeding. Vigorous plants show good winter hardiness. Chubby cute dense elliptical spikes thresh easily of their plump grains.
