Home-grown sesame seeds are well-suited for the same culinary or herbal purpose(s) as commercial seed, including pressing for oil. Sesame seed is one of the world's oldest oil seed crops. It is one of the highest oil contents of any seeds we can grow.  The added benefit is knowing exactly how they are grown. The plants are an attractive addition to a garden, with long stalks of trumpet flowers that give way to interesting plump seed pods. Sesame prefers a warm growing season. We direct-seeded the small seeds at the beginning of June but you can also start them indoors about 4 weeks before your last frost. In the fall monitor frequently the seed pods which turn brown and split as they mature. We picked the pods as they just started to split and hung them in mesh bags to avoid losing seed. Black sesame seeds are known for a more nutty flavor over tan varieties. Home-grown sesame seeds make a great special gift for the foodies in your life.
