Milagre Wheat
(Triticum turgidum subsp. polonicum); Heritage - Centennial; awned; a variety from the Kusa Seed Society Collection; Spring planted; Minimum 50 seeds
Milagre is in the Polish class of wheat (polonicum), its own botanical group distinct from common wheat. Large heads of long, graceful grain bracts become plump with narrow, long kernels and characterize this Portuguese landrace that pre-dates the industrial revolution. Milagre is also known for its height. Its hollow stems, often reaching 7 feet, reportedly were once used as drinking straws. Broad droopy leaves contribute to Milagre's ornamental appeal. Consider preventative support against lodging.
