A wartime effort, Blackhawk is a soft red winter wheat cultivar developed cooperatively in 1944 by Wisconsin's Agriculture Experiment Station and the USDA's Division of Cereal Crops and Diseases.

Fusiform spikes with amber awns thresh free their soft red winter wheat kernels. Blackhawk demonstrates broad resistance to several diseases, particularly leaf rust.
