This soft white winter wheat cultivar is named for Canadian breeder Frederick Gfeller (1904-1970) who developed it at the Ottawa Research Station Central Experimental Farm. Frederick was widely grown throughout the upper Midwest and Canada for several decades until it was superseded in the early 1980s.
