(Hordeum vulgare); 6-rowed; Hulled; Awned; a New York State Connection variety; Fall-planted
Wintermalt was developed in the late 70s in New York, a project between researchers at Cornell University, New York's Agricultural Experiment Station, and the USDA, released jointly with Oklahoma State Agriculture Experiment Station. It is believed to be the first winter malting barley developed in the U.S.
Medium spikes mature early mid-season. Strong straw resists lodging.
Wintermalt was developed with a moderate resistance to loose smut, covered smut and powdery mildew.
